Welcome to Kankakee Sands - Grace Teninga Discovery Trail, a captivating prairie oasis nestled in northwest Indiana. Located at the intersection of nature and conservation, Kankakee Sands is a part of the illustrious Efroymson Prairie, encompassing 8,400 acres of vibrant prairies and wetlands managed by The Nature Conservancy's Indiana chapter. This remarkable ecosystem bridges Willow Slough Fish and Wildlife Area, Beaver Lake Nature Preserve, Conrad Savanna Nature Preserve, and TNC’s Conrad Station Savanna, forming a collective expanse of over 20,000 acres of diverse natural habitats.

While our Bison Viewing Area and certain facilities are temporarily closed for an exciting makeover, the Grace Teninga Discovery Trail and Conrad Station Savanna remain open for exploration. Dive into a world where more than 86 rare, threatened, and endangered species thrive, and over 600 species of native plants flourish, creating a haven for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

Birdwatchers will revel in the presence of over 240 bird species, including the elusive Henslow’s sparrow and northern harrier. Butterfly enthusiasts can marvel at 70 species, including the regal fritillary, while our vibrant ecosystem supports over 900 moth species, alongside dragonflies, bees, frogs, lizards, and more. Not to forget, our majestic bison herd, roaming across 1,100 acres, plays a crucial role in maintaining this delicate prairie balance.

Join us for a self-guided adventure along several trails, or partake in our scheduled workdays and events for a hands-on prairie experience. Our Bison Rangers are on duty the last Saturday of every month to share insights about the bison and prairie management.
