It is part of the Efroymson Restoration, an 8,400-acre area of prairies and wetlands managed by The Nature Conservancy. The area is home to over 20,000 acres of diverse natural habitats and more than 86 rare, threatened, and endangered species. Visitors to Kankakee Sands can explore the prairies and wetlands, home to over 240 bird species, 70 species of butterflies, and more than 900 species of moths. The highlight of the park is the bison herd, which grazes on 1,100 acres of prairie. The bison play a crucial role in managing the grasslands and creating habitat for other wildlife.
