Jerry F. Costello National Great Rivers Research and Education Center Confluence Field Station
The Jerry F. Costello National Great Rivers Research and Education Center Confluence Field Station is a university institution located at 1 Confluence Way in Alton, Illinois, United States. The field station, dedicated in 2010, is a model of green construction with minimal environmental impact, integrated renewable energy systems, and internal recycling systems. Situated at the confluence of the Illinois, Missouri, and Mississippi Rivers, the 32,000-square-foot research facility contains laboratories, classrooms, and riverside access along its eco road. Phase II of construction was completed in 2014, adding new hydrologic and wildlife laboratories, office space, storage, and a conference room. The architecture of the building complements the surrounding environment and incorporates sustainable design features, earning LEED Gold Certification in 2015. Visitors can explore the Brookfield Natural Systems Display Area in the lobby and learn about the native species represented at the field station.
