Thomson Memorial Cemetery
β OpenWelcome to Thomson Memorial Cemetery, a historic and serene resting place located at 212 Tom Watson Way, Thomson, Georgia. Established in 1853, our cemetery holds a rich heritage that began when the Bethany Methodist Church relocated and formed the First United Methodist Church on Main Street. The land was generously deeded by James R. Wilson, and the earliest marked grave belongs to Mary Sutton, who passed away on June 5, 1855. Our cemetery is a testament to the 19th-century "Rural Cemetery Movement," which sought to create more picturesque and healthful settings away from traditional churchyards. This movement transformed cemeteries into park-like spaces, encouraging recreation, picnics, and family gatherings. Today, Thomson Memorial Cemetery continues to embody this vision with its tranquil and reflective environment.
