Fort George
Welcome to Fort George, a captivating historical park and tourist attraction located at 501 North Palafox Street, Pensacola, Florida. Immerse yourself in the rich history of this British fort, originally constructed in 1778 atop Gage Hill for the protection of Pensacola during the American Revolutionary War. Named in honor of King George III of England, Fort George was the largest of three fortifications in the area, alongside the Queen’s Redoubt and the Prince of Wales Redoubt. Strategically positioned at the intersection of Palafox and La Rua Streets, Fort George was surrounded by a dry moat, playing a crucial role in the defense against Spanish forces. The fort ultimately surrendered on May 8, 1781, during the Siege of Pensacola, and was subsequently renamed Fort San Miguel by the Spanish. Although the Spanish never occupied it, the fort's legacy endured through the ages.
