This 12-acre park is a federally protected area home to rare species such as the San Diego mesa mint, fairy shrimp, and possibly the endangered spadefoot toad. The park features a new trail system designed by Wimmer Yamada and Caughey, allowing students, faculty, staff, and the public to explore the pools, wildlife, and vegetation on the site. The restoration of the field and trails cost $2.1 million and were funded through the San Diego Community College District's construction bond program. The site is easily accessible from Black Mountain Road and Hillery Drive, with informational signs along the trail providing insight into the history and wildlife of the area. Fairy shrimp, a unique species found in vernal pools, play a crucial role in the ecosystem and are now protected in this mini-preserve.
