About the Business

Welcome to Sea Lion Overlook, a serene park nestled in the heart of Inverness, California, at 16375 Sir Francis Drake Boulevard. Situated within the breathtaking landscapes of Point Reyes National Seashore, our park offers visitors an unparalleled opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich diversity of wildlife and natural beauty that this unique region has to offer.
At Sea Lion Overlook, nature enthusiasts and casual visitors alike can experience the wonders of the wild. From December through March, witness the fascinating behavior of elephant seals at the nearby Elephant Seal Overlook, where these majestic marine mammals gather to breed and raise their young. Listen to the distinctive calls of the seals and observe their interactions in their natural habitat.
Birdwatchers will find themselves in a paradise, with nearly half of North America's bird species identified within the park. Explore the diverse habitats, from lush forests to expansive beaches, and keep an eye out for osprey, hawks, and even the elusive golden eagle. The park's trails provide excellent vantage points for observing a variety of bird species, especially during the fall migration and winter layover.
For those interested in marine life, Point Reyes offers one of the best spots for viewing the migration of the California gray whale. From December through May, these magnificent creatures can often be seen from the Lighthouse and Chimney Rock areas.
Our easy 1.5-mile trail meanders through diverse ecosystems, including fresh water ponds and brackish lagoons, offering dramatic views of the open ocean and the Great Beach. This trail is perfect for those seeking both tranquility and the excitement of discovering wildlife in its natural setting.
At Sea Lion Overlook and throughout Point Reyes, we encourage respectful wildlife watching. Visitors are reminded to keep a safe distance from animals and to follow the guidelines set by NOAA's National Marine Sanctuaries and the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics. Remember, you're visiting the homes of these incredible creatures, and it's our responsibility to protect and preserve their habitats.
Whether you're here for a day or an extended stay, Sea Lion Overlook promises a memorable experience filled with the beauty and wonder of nature. Bring your curiosity, patience, and respect for the wildlife and landscapes, and let the natural world reveal its secrets to you.

Reviews
"Small pullout for about 3 or 4 cars and then a short walk down to a viewpoint of a well-populated sea lion area. There are a couple of benches at the viewpoint."
"It's just a view point on the way. There is a little space to pull over your car and walk down the stairs to view the seal lions below on the rocks. It's too far away for a clear view with naked eyes. I could see only 2 sea lions with a binocular. There is a bench to spend some time admiring the view. But I didn't see any trail going down. Maybe it was temporarily closed. You can take a chance here, but overall not very impressive for viewing sea lions."
"How cool to be able to see and hear elephant seals! We ended up finding a better spot to get closer to them, but this was a picturesque view and vantage point! Hike wasn't a hike, just a walk. 2 kids 10 & under."
"Wonderful experience. There was a lot of Sea Lion activity. Barking at each other etc and the sound Carrie’d right up the cliff. We also saw what appeared to be a huge pack of either Sea Lions or Seals. We didn’t have binoculars (I recommend them for point Reyes)."
"It's a beautiful, up hill hike to see the sea lions. There are no fences to protect you from the steep cliff above the sea lions. Wear comfortable shoes, bring snacks and drinks. There isn't any places to buy food or drinks in the park."
