Built in the 1930s as part of President Roosevelt's New Deal Projects, the Woodlands is one of only 46 Recreation Demonstration Areas in the US, and the only one in California and a Redwood forest. It has served its original purpose of group camping and outdoor education uninterrupted since opening in 1938.
