Located at 4323 Slauson Avenue, Maywood, California, our library has a rich history of serving the public and promoting literacy and lifelong learning. Originally founded as the Maywood Free Public Library in the Lincoln School, our library has undergone several transformations and relocations, finally settling at its current site next to City Hall in 1961. In 1993, the library was rededicated in honor of the civil rights leader César Chávez, reflecting our commitment to community empowerment and education.

With over forty years of experience in arts education, theater performance, circus arts, and sports coaching, Tyehimba is dedicated to mentoring youth and families in inner urban areas. The institute offers a wide range of classes, including theater arts, dance, drumming, and various physical activities, aimed at educating and enlightening participants about African culture and history. Tyehimba's passion for sharing authentic African stories and promoting cultural diversity has led to partnerships with organizations like Sacramento START and various school districts to produce performing arts programs. As a dynamic duo with Ben Professor Slaps Isaac, the institute offers the only local Senegalese West African Drum and Dance instruction in Sonoma County, inspiring students of all ages and skill levels.
