About the Business
Working Artists Ventura - WAV is a vibrant community for artists and creative businesses located in the heart of the Downtown Cultural District in Ventura, California. This unique institution offers affordable and market-rate live-work spaces for artists from all over the world, including painters, sculptors, dancers, musicians, poets, actors, and filmmakers. In addition to providing housing for artists, WAV also offers supportive housing with social services for individuals transitioning out of homelessness.
The WAV project includes a theater and gallery space that is programmed by the resident artists, as well as plans for art-friendly businesses such as cafés, coffee houses, jazz clubs, and wine bars. The community has a small village feel, with a variety of building sizes and configurations, and features entrances and balconies that engage with the surrounding streets.
Built using green building technology, WAV is committed to sustainability and environmental responsibility. JSCo, in partnership with PLACE, has played a key role in the development and management of WAV, contributing over $3 million to help bring the project to fruition. The City of Ventura has been a strong supporter of WAV, which currently houses 69 low-income residents with a high priority for artists.
