Established in January 1934 as the West Willow Station in a modest one-room storeroom, our library has grown and evolved, earning its current name in 1941 and settling into its spacious 6,500-square-foot building in August 1957. Named in honor of Bret Harte, a renowned nineteenth-century writer celebrated for his captivating California Gold Rush tales, our library continues to inspire and educate patrons of all ages. Please note that in observance of Labor Day, all Long Beach Public Library (LBPL) locations and services, including phone lines, will be closed from Saturday, August 31 through Monday, September 2. In 1910, we became a proud branch of the Long Beach Public Library system. Our current home, a stunning 7,475-square-foot building inspired by a Spanish castle, opened its doors in January 1929.
