He went on to earn his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in 1992. After completing a transitional year at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Milwaukee, he pursued an Ophthalmology Residency and a Glaucoma Fellowship at the Mayo Clinic Department of Ophthalmology in Rochester, Minnesota. His expertise and passion for teaching led him to serve as an Assistant Professor at the Mayo Clinic before joining the Eye Clinic of Wisconsin in 1999.
Though Dr. Hattenhauer retired in June 2023, his legacy continues to influence the clinic's commitment to delivering cutting-edge eye care.
