About Us

Welcome to Cumberland Island National Seashore
Discover the pristine beauty and rich biodiversity of Cumberland Island, the southernmost and largest of Georgia’s barrier islands. Located at 30 853025, St. Marys, Georgia, this breathtaking national park offers an unparalleled glimpse into untouched nature, just waiting to be explored.
Your Oasis of Natural Wonder
Spanning 17.5 miles of protected beaches, Cumberland Island is larger than Manhattan, stretching approximately 16 miles in length and up to 3 miles in width. The island's stunning sand beaches and impressive dune systems act as a natural shield against the sea, safeguarding the salt marshes that lie between the island and the mainland. Venture inland to discover a well-preserved maritime forest, interspersed with serene freshwater ponds, saltwater coves, and mysterious swamps.
A Sanctuary for Wildlife
Cumberland Island serves as a critical habitat for a diverse array of wildlife. Witness the majestic loggerhead turtles nesting on the northern beaches, observe alligators basking in the ponds and swamps, or spot shorebirds such as pelicans, egrets, and herons soaring overhead or foraging along the shore.
Preserved for Future Generations
Established in 1972, the Cumberland Island National Seashore encompasses 36,415 acres of beaches, dunes, forests, swamps, ponds, and marshes, managed by the National Park Service. The Cumberland Wilderness, created in 1982, further protects an additional 9,886 acres. Thanks to efforts by The Nature Conservancy and the National Park Service, much of the island remains a pristine haven for public enjoyment.
Plan Your Visit
Accessible only by ferry, Cumberland Island invites deer-hunters, fishers, campers, and nature enthusiasts to explore its unspoiled beauty. To protect this fragile ecosystem, please note that bicycles, pets, and indiscriminate dune crossing are not permitted. Immerse yourself in one of Georgia’s best-preserved natural landscapes and experience the tranquility and wonder of Cumberland Island.
