About the Business
Welcome to the Bushrod Library, a cherished institution located at 6304 Castor Avenue in the vibrant city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. As a proud member of the Free Library system, Bushrod Library serves the diverse communities of Oxford Circle, Castor Gardens, Upper Northwood, Summerdale, and the Lower Northeast, providing a welcoming space for learning and enrichment.
The Bushrod Library has a rich history rooted in the philanthropic vision of Dr. Bushrod Washington James, a renowned Philadelphia eye surgeon and humanitarian. His legacy of community service and advocacy for education laid the foundation for the library, which opened its doors on October 25, 1950. It was the first newly constructed branch in the Free Library system since 1927, reflecting Dr. James' enduring commitment to accessible knowledge and community support.
Our library features two floors with ample reading rooms for the public, and a dedicated Bushrod Room for children’s programming, honoring Dr. James' bequest to prioritize youth education. Renovated in 1999 as part of the "Changing Lives" campaign, Bushrod Library continues to evolve, offering modern amenities including Internet access to support our patrons' needs.
Please note that in observance of Labor Day, the Free Library system, including the Bushrod Library, will close at 1 p.m. on Friday, August 30, and will remain closed through Monday, September 2.
Whether you're seeking a quiet place to read, attending one of our engaging programs, or exploring our extensive collection, Bushrod Library is here to serve as a cornerstone of knowledge and community for all. We invite you to visit and discover all that we have to offer.

"Very nice librarian for kids."
"Eww! Nasty library, nasty and rude staff just went to check the library out and the staff were so rude! Couldn’t stay more than 5 minutes it was my first time and absolutely my last time! Went @ 4:30 then just when I walked in they started calling me with loud voice we are closing like chill I am here just to check it out 2 staff one was black guy and an old white guy were so rude I left with tears"
"A nice little library I grew up visiting. Not as big as others, but still has a fairly large agglomeration of books to choose from . The adult section is on the first floor while the childre and teens on the 2nd . Their customer service has plenty of room for improvement and their hours of business could be better."
"The security guard. She is ignorant as all get out. Turns the lights out in downstairs at 7:30 pm while people are still reading and working on computers. Library doesn't close until 8:00 please m or 5 minutes before at 7:55 in alAother Philadelphia libraries. When she comes into work she goes right on the computer. Complete disregard for people in library, and a complete lack of her duties as a security guard. I think she bullies staff as they allow her to bully them and the patrons ."
"Very nice Library...the aids are also helpful with a nice attitude. Lots of books, 2 floors..a place for very small kids to learn while adults and bigger kids learn...a floor for everyone...you really feel like you are in your own study room here. Computers and printing also available on both floors."
