About the Business
Welcome to the Grand Army of the Republic Civil War Museum & Archive, a unique treasure located at 8110 Frankford Avenue, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Housed in the historic Lewis-Pattison House, built in 1805, our museum is the only one in Philadelphia dedicated exclusively to the history of the Civil War. As a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, we invite you to explore the personal stories of the men and women who served during this pivotal time in American history.
Our revitalized exhibits showcase personal memorabilia from veterans, with a special emphasis on those connected to Philadelphia and the surrounding region. We are proud to offer free admission to our museum, although we encourage visitors to consider supporting us through membership or donations, which are tax-deductible.
For those interested in research, our extensive archives are a valuable resource for historical and genealogical inquiries. We possess an outstanding collection of books, documents, and photographs, including regimental histories and records from past Grand Army of the Republic Posts. To access research assistance, we kindly request that you become a member or make a donation to support our efforts.
Visits to the museum are by appointment to ensure a personalized experience, as our dedicated staff consists solely of volunteers. We request seven days' notice to arrange a guided tour or research visit, which is available outside our regular Tuesday hours.
We also publish "The Scout," our esteemed journal featuring articles on the history of the G.A.R., museum highlights, and recent donations. The May 2024 edition is now available, and we encourage you to read it and consider becoming a 2025 member.
Join us in preserving and exploring the rich history of the Civil War at the Grand Army of the Republic Museum & Archive.
