Reviews
"One of 14 lift locks on Delaware and Raritan Canal's 44-mile main stem, the Lambertville Lock was constructed in 1848: the outlet lock was constructed at Lambertville for a cable ferry across the Delaware River. It was in operation until 1912-13. One can't overestimate the importance of the Delaware and Raritan Canal back in the XIXth century when it served as the most important if not the only one transport thoroughfare and functioned as "an efficient and reliable means of transportation of freight between Philadelphia and New York City, transporting anthracite coal from eastern Pennsylvania during much of the 19th and early 20th centuries." Later on, the Canal's importance waned as railroads were used to perform, more rapidly, the same function as canals, but it remained in operation until 1932." Nowadays, walking in Lambertville Delaware & Raritan Canal Hiking Trail, one should stop by Lambertville D&R Canal Lock, watch the roaring water, and learn about the area's history."
