"The Morris Canal was famous for its incline planes. This is the site of the Morris Canal Plane 1 West. Planes were where barges were lifted uphill on special cradle rail cars powered by water spinning a turbine. This plane was the final lift to the canal’s high point even with Lake Hopatcong. The sleeper stones to which the rails were attached along with some of the hardware are still visible though the stones have all been moved when houses were built here. Fingers of land are still present in the nearby lake marking where the canal exited."
