About the Business
Welcome to Quakertown Preserve
Nestled in the scenic landscape of Franklin Township, Quakertown Preserve is a hidden gem in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. Located at 1175 Croton Road, Flemington, NJ 08822, this 35-acre park offers a tranquil escape for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. With its rich history and commitment to conservation, the preserve is a testament to the community's dedication to preserving natural beauty for future generations.
Quakertown Preserve is the result of two significant land acquisition projects, made possible by the collaboration between the Hunterdon Land Trust and various public entities, including Franklin Township, the NJ Green Acres program, and the Hunterdon County Open Space Trust Fund. The preserve is adjacent to vast expanses of preserved farmland and features a diverse landscape of cultivated fields, meadows, cedar and hardwood forests, and a crucial watershed protection area. The springs within the preserve form the headwaters of Capoolong Creek, adding to its ecological significance.
In 2011, a major wetlands restoration project, supported by dedicated volunteers and Land Trust staff, transformed the area by removing a man-made pond and invasive plants, replacing them with native species. Today, the flourishing wetlands are a testament to the power of community collaboration and environmental stewardship.
Visitors to Quakertown Preserve can enjoy a variety of recreational activities. The park is perfect for hiking, birding, and family picnics, with a network of trails that wind through fields and woods, offering a serene setting for a leisurely walk. The preserve also welcomes horseback riding, with trails maintained by the 70-member Pittstown Trail Association.
The preservation of Quakertown Preserve was made possible thanks to the generosity of landowners Hugo and Marilyn Pfaltz and Mary Bodine, who valued the land's natural beauty and historical significance. Mary Bodine, a lifelong resident of Franklin Township, expressed her desire to protect the land, stating, "I always enjoyed watching the birds and other wildlife … I didn’t want to see the land developed."
