Welcome to New Savannah Cemetery
Located at 2102 Lock and Dam Road in Augusta, Georgia, New Savannah Cemetery stands as a solemn testament to the rich history of the area. Nestled within the scenic New Savannah Bluff Lock and Dam Park, this historic cemetery is one of the few remaining connections to the once-thriving town of New Savannah.
Founded around 1740 as a Chickasaw village on the Savannah River, New Savannah played a significant role in the early history of Georgia. Under the leadership of Squirrel King, the Horse Creek Chickasaws established this vibrant community, which served as a hub for farming, hunting, and scouting until the Revolutionary War. By 1757, the town was home to approximately "seventy Gun Men," as noted by CPT Daniel Pepper.
After the Revolution, New Savannah transitioned into a bustling tobacco inspection center. Local farmers brought their tobacco leaves here to be packed into hogshead barrels, inspected for quality, and transported 215 river miles downstream to the market in Savannah, Georgia. Although the tobacco market declined in the early 19th century, leading to the commercial demise of New Savannah, the cemetery remains a poignant reminder of the town's storied past.
New Savannah Cemetery offers a tranquil setting for reflection and remembrance, surrounded by the natural beauty of the park. While the original town has faded into history, the cemetery endures as a cherished landmark, preserving the legacy of New Savannah for generations to come. We invite you to visit and explore the history and heritage of this unique site.
