About the Business
East Asian Library at WashU
Welcome to the East Asian Library, an integral part of the Washington University in St. Louis (WashU) Libraries, located at 1 Brookings Drive, St. Louis, Missouri 63130. Our library is dedicated to supporting the academic and research needs of the WashU community, particularly the East Asian Studies Program offered by the Department of East Asian Languages & Cultures, along with various other departments and programs.
Our library is a collaborative effort with the Joint Center for East Asian Studies, serving both WashU and the University of Missouri-St. Louis. We boast an extensive collection of resources, including three levels of book stacks, a basement, and a spacious reading room with over 100 seats. Our reading room is renowned as one of the best study spots on campus.
Since 1963, the East Asian Library has been curating an impressive collection of Chinese and Japanese materials, thanks to the efforts of Professor Emeritus Stanley Spector and generous support from the Carnegie Foundation and government grants. Initially part of Olin Library, these collections found a dedicated home in January Hall in 1972.
Explore our vast collection, which includes approximately 800 volumes of rare and special books, manuscripts, and other materials. Our reading room is equipped with two public computers featuring CJK software, providing access to the library catalog, the internet, and additional resources. We also offer a networked multi-function printer for printing and scanning services to WashU students, faculty, and staff.
For those requiring wireless access, the East Asian Library is equipped with a robust network. Detailed information on accessing the network can be found on the WashU IT Wireless Network Access page.
Conveniently located on the second floor of January Hall, the library is easily accessible by stairs or elevator. Wheelchair access is available via an elevator to the 3rd floor of Ridgley Hall, with a bridge connecting to the reading room adjacent to the stacks.
We invite you to visit us and discover the wealth of resources available to support your academic endeavors. For more information, including directions and services, please refer to our campus map or contact us directly.
