About the Business
Welcome to Mississippi Greenway: A Scenic Urban Escape
Nestled near the heart of downtown St. Louis, the Mississippi Greenway offers a unique blend of natural beauty, history, and urban charm. Stretching from Chouteau to the iconic Old Chain of Rocks Bridge, this 16-mile paved trail invites you to explore the vibrant riverfront and experience sweeping views of the mighty Mississippi River.
Discover the Greenway's Highlights:
- Historic Route & Landmarks: Journey along the industrial riverfront to the historic Route 66 bridge and explore the Historic Mary Meachum Freedom Crossing, Missouri’s first nationally designated Underground Railroad site.
- Stunning Views & Unique Parks: Enjoy the picturesque views of the working riverfront and visit Rootwad Park, a pocket park with artistic embellishments by the late Bob Cassilly, founder of the City Museum.
- Connectivity & Accessibility: The greenway seamlessly connects to the Madison County (Illinois) Transit trail system via the McKinley Bridge and Old Chain of Rocks Bridge, making it an ideal route for both walkers and cyclists.
- Urban Connections: Access the greenway through various downtown points, including Chouteau Avenue and Washington Avenue, and enjoy convenient transit options via buses and nearby transit centers.
Trail Features:
- Flat and sunny with limited shade, the trail offers a dedicated bikeway and a parallel path for walkers.
- Public amenities include picnic tables and restrooms in Riverfront Park, open during summer months.
- The greenway is part of a vibrant network managed in cooperation with local municipalities, each setting their own rules and regulations for trail use.
Cautionary Notes:
- The O’Fallon Street and Carr Street floodgates are closed, so follow the greenway on the "dry side" of the flood wall.
- Use caution near Maline Creek, as summer 2022 floodwaters have altered the trail. Fencing is present, but space is available for walkers and cyclists to navigate safely.
Explore & Enjoy:
- Visit the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial (The Arch) and delve into the rich history of St. Louis. More information is available on the National Park Service website.
- Fishing enthusiasts can access the Mississippi River along most of the trail.
Mission:
Great Rivers Greenway is dedicated to making the St. Louis region a more vibrant place to live, work, and play by developing a network of greenways. Discover the Mississippi Greenway and embark on an adventure that promises both relaxation and inspiration.

Reviews
"The description sounded amazing…was planning a 10 mile run. Sadly, outside of arch, this place is in ruins and didn’t feel safe. Cops even stopped me to advise it was “closed”. Sad to see another great city deteriorating"
"Area around the Arch was nice though there were random concrete blocks and dumpsters on the trail, branches of trees need to be pruned since they are extending onto the bike path, a bunch of people fishing the river parked trucks and trailers directly on the trail and blocking it. There also appeared to have been a homeless camp, or the remnants of one, right on the trail by LaCledes Landing and just north of the MLK bridge. Also, there was a steel wall blocking the trail which doesn't appear on Google and no signs redirecting you around it. Would be happy to give a better review one day, but this trail needs a fair bit of work."
"A place where you can see not only graffiti but murals by many talented artists"
"As a biking trailhead it is was a good spot to get on the trail. But the parking lot was only mud...."
"Love this bike trail. I’m a lil bummed out they had to close off and reroute the trailhead but I can get over that. All kinds of wildlife! Prairie dogs, deer, bald eagles nest there, and I’ve seen some beautiful striped garden snakes. No need to worry if you don’t like snakes because they’re off in the wooded areas not the trail. Avoid at night. I got seriously spooked by a pack of coyotes! The trail is not lit and is basically in the middle of nowhere. Even with a lamp I don’t go there at night. Police bike along the trail in the day and there’s a manned building for bike repairs and relax on the weekends. Only bathroom is there, a bush, or a port-a-potty at the Chain of Rocks bridge. A rest stop is near the end but currently being renovated. Two water fountains along the way so please stay safe in the summer and bring a large water bottle in the summer. The entire stretch is in full sun. Plenty of riders through the entire day so I feel very safe. So many great opportunities for pictures!"
