Sandy Island Bald Eagle Sanctuary 10 Sandy Slough Road, Winfield, MO 63389
About the Business
Welcome to the Sandy Island Bald Eagle Sanctuary, a breathtaking natural park located at 10 Sandy Slough Road, Winfield, Missouri 63389. Just a short drive from St. Louis, this sanctuary offers a unique opportunity to observe bald eagles in their natural winter habitat along the Mississippi River. Established in 1992 through the generous donation of Missouri photographer Frank Oberle and his wife Judy, Sandy Island is dedicated to providing a safe haven for these majestic birds.
The sanctuary is a vital wintering ground for bald eagles, who find refuge among the cottonwood and silver maple trees. For an up-close experience, visitors can utilize the Mary Chambers Wiese Observation Platform, situated on Corps of Engineers property at the south end of Lock and Dam #25. This platform is equipped with a mounted scope for optimal birdwatching.
Please note, to ensure the eagles' safety and minimize disturbances, the preserve is closed to the public from November through March during their roosting season. However, prime eagle viewing occurs in January and February, when many eagles gather in the area.
When planning your visit, be sure to check the local weather forecast and dress appropriately for the conditions. No special gear is required to enjoy this extraordinary experience. Come and witness the awe-inspiring beauty of bald eagles at Sandy Island Bald Eagle Sanctuary, where nature and conservation come together.
