Begin your journey by marveling at the Western & Atlantic Railroad Tunnel, an engineering masterpiece completed in 1850. This historic tunnel was the first major railroad tunnel in the South and the first to penetrate the Appalachian Mountains. Join our guided tour to witness the original drill marks from its construction and learn about the significant role it played during the Civil War’s “Great Locomotive Chase” in 1862.
Step back in time as you explore the historic Clisby Austin House, where Union and Confederate soldiers once walked. This historic site served as a Confederate field hospital from 1862-1863 and later as the headquarters for Union General William T. Sherman in May 1864 as he orchestrated his renowned Atlanta Campaign.
