Horseneck Point Life-Saving Station - Buzzards Bay Coalition
About the Business
Welcome to the Horseneck Point Life-Saving Station, a unique historical gem located at 241 East Beach Road in Westport, Massachusetts. Managed by the Buzzards Bay Coalition, this state-owned station is part of the Horseneck Beach State Reservation and offers a fascinating glimpse into Westport's rich maritime history.
Originally built in 1888 by the Humane Society of Massachusetts, the Life-Saving Station was one of 69 coastal rescue stations established to aid mariners in distress along Buzzards Bay’s treacherous coastline. After a storied past as a restaurant, bar, and even an ice cream parlor, the station was meticulously restored to its original appearance in 2009 and reopened as a museum and visitor center in 2014.
Today, the Horseneck Point Life-Saving Station stands as one of only four intact life-saving stations open to the public in Massachusetts. Visitors can explore exhibits that detail the perilous history of Buzzards Bay, including infamous shipwrecks and the impact of the Bouchard 120 oil spill. The station also highlights recent successes in environmental protection, driven by the Buzzards Bay Coalition's dedicated efforts.
During the summer months, the station features a coastal touch tank, allowing visitors to interact with local marine life such as sea stars and hermit crabs. Seasonal programs and events offer further opportunities to engage with this storied site.
As part of the Coalition's network of learning centers, the Life-Saving Station is a testament to the ongoing commitment to preserving clean water and protecting the natural beauty of Westport and Buzzards Bay. Plan your visit from June through September and immerse yourself in the captivating history and breathtaking coastal landscapes of this remarkable region. Reviews
"Beautiful beach. Plenty of parking."
"If you're a tree/inland camper, being at the ocean is quite a challenge! The wind at an ocean-side campground is relentless; it seemed always to hover around 25 miles per hour. The moisture coming off the ocean doesn't allow for clothing to dry, and everything gets coated with a saltwater slurry. After a couple of days even the bed sheets are damp; which makes for an uncomfortable night sleep. And if one is prone to motion sickness, the constant rocking camper could become a problem. A day-trip to the beach is one thing. Staying long-term will certainly have its challenges. But the view of the ocean and the sound of the crashing waves are amazing!"
"Nature is beautiful"
"We could hardly get the kids to leave! Fascinating history of the life saving stations in Buzzards Bay. So glad it will be reopening in August 2021."
