About the Business
Welcome to Jennie Lagoulis Reservation, a historic and natural treasure located on Boston Road in Newbury, Massachusetts. This unique park offers a captivating blend of history, nature, and adventure, making it an ideal destination for families, nature enthusiasts, and history buffs alike.
Spanning the remarkable Four Rock property, Jennie Lagoulis Reservation is home to the storied Devil’s Den limestone quarries, a site rich in history and natural beauty. With a diverse landscape that includes uplands, wetlands, and maritime forests, this area has been a cherished playground for local children for over 300 years.
Explore the ancient quarry sites of the Pawtucket of Agawam and other Algonquian peoples, who once mined precious ores and minerals such as galena, pyrite, and quartz for both practical and spiritual purposes. Wander through the same woods where Paleoindians hunted wood bison over twelve thousand years ago.
Today, visitors can enjoy a well-marked, gently rolling trail that begins at the parking lot. The trail features numerous boardwalks, providing excellent vantage points for birdwatching and allowing hikers to traverse through serene pine forests and past the historic Devil’s Den quarries. The path is suitable for visitors of all ages, offering an engaging journey through stands of cedar, oak, and pine.
The conservation of this land in 2014 has helped protect a vital mosaic of habitats, from the Martin Burns Wildlife Management Area to the Great Marsh. The park's large wet meadow, surrounded by upland forests, is a haven for wildlife, including deer, coyotes, foxes, and a variety of bird species such as the northern harrier, short-eared owl, and the elusive whip-poor-will.
For those planning a visit, a large gravel parking lot is conveniently located near the trailhead, marked with Greenbelt signage. Be sure to note the striking Devil's Pulpit rock formation across the street.
Jennie Lagoulis Reservation is more than just a park; it's a living testament to the natural and cultural history of the region. "The Jennie Lagoulis Reservation, I’ve always known it as Devil’s Den, from when our 5th grade science teacher took us here to explore the landscape in the 1950s. Then it was rocky and barren, a former 17th C. Limestone quarry, now, rocky and overgrown. Then as now, it’s a spooky and eerie place with caverns and tales of witchcraft and strange creatures wandering about. My last visit, I startled a wild turkey perched in a tree, freaking out my wife and me, reinforcing my belief in this strange and magical place. From the Newburyport rotary on Rt. 1, head south on the Newburyport Turnpike 1.7 miles, left on Boston Rd, left at the fork on Boston Rd, park on left. Enjoy the experience. Boo."
"Lovely old quarry with beautiful trees and rocks."
"Nice little park, dog friendly. Many trails are very overgrown with poison ivy though. Stay away if you are allergic!"
"Excellent place to hiking, peaceful"
