Wet Meadows Viewing Platform
About the Business
Welcome to Wet Meadows Viewing Platform
Nestled within the expansive Common Pasture, Wet Meadows Viewing Platform offers a birding and wildlife observation paradise in Newbury, Massachusetts. Located on Scotland Road, this unique park is a sanctuary where nature enthusiasts can immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of local wildlife and history.
A Haven of Natural Beauty and History
The Wet Meadows Viewing Platform is part of a 1,000-acre area steeped in history and ecological significance. This wetland, part of the Little River watershed, has been a vital resource for centuries. Indigenous Algonquian peoples once relied on its diverse grasses and abundant wildlife, including waterfowl, reptiles, and amphibians. Later, colonists used the land for grazing cattle, while Indigenous peoples hunted cervids such as the white-tailed deer.
Wildlife Highlights
Today, this preserved landscape is home to rare and fascinating species like the American Bittern, barn owl, and blue-spotted salamander. The flat, wet grassland habitat, maintained through centuries of grazing, supports a wide variety of sedges, rushes, and wetland grasses. In spring, visitors can witness the spectacle of common snipe, and nesting killdeer, with the possibility of spotting dabbling ducks and various waterfowl when the water table is high.
Conservation and Access
The conservation of this precious habitat is a collaborative effort involving the City of Newburyport, the Trust for Public Land, and the Parker River Clean Water Association. We invite you to explore this serene environment, just 1.0 mile east on Scotland Road, with convenient parking available on the left.

Reviews
"It's not really the best place to park along a main road. On the right day, you might get the chance to see a hawk or owl, but unfortunately, I didn't see anything but a song sparrow. Just a Viewing Platform overlooking a few grass fields. Sometimes, there are cows out there grazing on the grass."
"Small but nice. Not much there when i went but it is a popular birding spot"
"A great Birding location at this time of year. There is a wide shoulder on the westbound side of the road. Please approach from the east to avoid an unsafe u turn in busy traffic."
