About the Central Burying Ground
Welcome to Central Burying Ground: A Historical Gem in Boston
Located at the heart of Boston Common on Boylston Street near Tremont Street, Central Burying Ground is a significant historical site dating back to 1756. Established to alleviate the overcrowding at other prominent cemeteries such as King's Chapel, Copp's Hill, and Granary Burying Grounds, Central Burying Ground offers a unique glimpse into Boston's rich past.
Originally part of Colonel Fitch's pasture, the land was acquired from Andrew Oliver, Jr., and was initially considered less desirable due to its distance from the town's market center. Despite this, it has become an integral part of Boston's history, housing the graves of many notable figures.
In the 1820s, efforts were made to close the cemetery to extend the tree-lined mall on the Common, and an 1826 ordinance prohibited new burials and the construction of additional tombs. However, this ban was lifted in 1836 to allow for more tombs, reflecting the ongoing demand for burial space.
During Mayor Armstrong's administration, a corner of the cemetery was removed to extend Boylston Street, and the large tomb structure known as "The Dell" was built to house the remains displaced by the street's construction. Additionally, human remains discovered during subway construction in 1895 were respectfully reinterred in a large grave in the northwest part of the site.
Today, Central Burying Ground stands as a testament to Boston's evolving landscape and serves as a peaceful retreat for those wishing to explore the city's storied past. We invite you to visit and reflect on the history that has shaped this beautiful city.

Reviews of Central Burying Ground
"Central Burying Ground in Boston Our visit to the Central Burying Ground in Boston was both fascinating and enriching. Established in 1756, this historic cemetery is located on the edge of Boston Common and offers a unique glimpse into the city’s past. One interesting fact about the Central Burying Ground is that it serves as the final resting place for many British soldiers who died during the Revolutionary War, as well as American patriots and notable Bostonians. Additionally, the cemetery includes a section for the graves of those who died during the Boston Smallpox Epidemic of 1792, reflecting the public health challenges of the era. The cemetery is also known for its serene and picturesque setting, making it a peaceful spot to explore and reflect. Among the notable burials is the artist Gilbert Stuart, famous for his portraits of George Washington. Overall, the Central Burying Ground is a captivating site that combines history, art, and the natural beauty of Boston Common. It's a must-see for anyone interested in the rich tapestry of Boston's history."
"Really interesting place to visit, and plenty of squirrels hopping around to keep you company as you observe the headstones. Unfortunately most have terrible erosion but to be expected on headstones over 200yrs old"
"very beautiful grounds. spent a long time reading each headstone. just wish the grounds were maintained a bit better"
"I just can’t stop loving all these loving creatures. I call them “Linta-kun”. This feeder knowledgeable guy told me that there are people who “KICK” the squirrels when they come to their feet. If you are that person, first of all, I’m gonna kick you hell out of you first, then I’ll call a police, so the good thing you do is that DO NOT EVER NEAR TO THIS PARK. It’s a sanctuary for the wild life and you are not welcomed. If you will LOVE THEM, then please go and enjoy!!!!"
"Fun fact: Gilbert Stuart is buried here. Who is he? The guy who drew the portrait of George Washington that we have on our $1 bills in our wallets today."
