Located at 1 City Hall Square, Boston, Massachusetts, the Public Works Department - General Services is dedicated to ensuring that Boston’s streets, sidewalks, and bridges are safe, clean, and visually appealing. As a leading general contractor and local government office, we provide essential services that enhance the quality of life in our neighborhoods.

Our responsibilities include the construction, maintenance, and cleaning of approximately 802 miles of roadways across Boston. We manage two major drawbridges, maintain 68,055 City-owned streetlights, and oversee contracts for the removal and disposal of approximately 260,000 tons of solid waste annually. Additionally, we proudly operate Boston's recycling program, diverting around 44,000 tons of waste each year.

In response to the challenges posed by sea level rise and storm surges, we are actively working to address flooding and protect public rights-of-way. Our department also oversees the issuance of permits for opening or occupying public ways, with mandatory Rules and Specifications requirements.

Our services extend to managing commercial waste permits and ensuring construction activities are conducted with minimal impact on sidewalks and public spaces. We restrict access to certain sections of streets and sidewalks when necessary to maintain public safety.

The Street Lighting Division is responsible for the repair and maintenance of streetlights, while our Construction Inspection Unit (CIU) provides daily reports on active construction work by utility and private contractors in Boston’s Public Way.
