Eliot Burying Ground
About the Business
Welcome to Eliot Burying Ground, a historic gem nestled in the heart of Roxbury at 20 Eustis Street, Boston, Massachusetts. Established in 1630, this revered site holds the distinction of being the oldest burying ground in Roxbury and one of the three oldest in Boston. With its first interment dating back to 1633, Eliot Burying Ground is steeped in rich history and offers a unique glimpse into the early colonial era.
During the American Revolution, this ground played a pivotal role as the site of the Roxbury Neck fortifications. In 1775, American colonists constructed a redoubt here to protect the road to Dorchester and the entrance to Roxbury, known as the Burying Ground Redoubt.
Though interments ceased in 1854, family tombs continued to be used. In 1857, significant enhancements were made, including the construction of an external wall, gate, and picturesque landscaping with pathways and trees.
Visitors can explore the Dudley family tomb near the Eustis Street entrance, which houses the remains of notable colonial figures such as Governor Thomas Dudley, Governor Joseph Dudley, Chief Justice Paul Dudley, and Colonel William Dudley. The tomb is marked by an oval marble slab, replacing the original pewter plate repurposed during the siege of Boston.
The Minister's or Parish Tomb is the final resting place of John Eliot, the "Apostle to the Indians," and five ministers of the First Church of Roxbury. The site also commemorates Benjamin Thompson, a schoolmaster and physician, alongside generations of early Roxbury families.
Eliot Burying Ground is more than a cemetery; it's a testament to the enduring legacy of Roxbury's early settlers and their contributions to American history. We invite you to step back in time and explore this sacred space, where stories of bravery, leadership, and community spirit come alive.
