"I just watched an episode of Death Valley Days (season 5 episode 12) which tells the story of the Washington Elm. Perhaps it's the true story, perhaps it's embellished, IDK ."
"A gravestone style plaque denotes a tree under which Washington supposedly first took command of the American Army on July 3, 1775. However, the original elm tree died in 1923."
"Under this tree Washington took command of the US Army for the first time. Located on Cambridge Common, the original tree fell in a storm 100 or so years ago- but the tree here was planted from a sapling of the original. The original spot for the tree would have been more out on the road between this pot and the church on the corner. You’ll find many other Revolution markers within walking distance as Cambridge Common was the camp for the US Army during the siege of Boston."
"Perhaps Bostonians and their Cambridge neighbors are overwhelmed with their riches of Revolutionary War sites, memorials, plaques and the like, not so those of us that live in New York. If you love such history in New York you have to travel pretty widely within the five boroughs to get a taste and that is really all that remains, a taste, of our Revolutionary past. I visited here during the evening (hence my night-time photos) after a long day on a business trip. I savored every moment."
"Great Cannons. Under the tree George Washington took command of the US army. Historic place; mostly overlooked. Cannons are amazing. On 4th of July they use these cannons for a show in the park."
