About the Business
Lost Pond Conservation Area
Welcome to the Lost Pond Conservation Area, a hidden gem nestled in the extreme southwest corner of Brookline, Massachusetts. This serene 30-acre park offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore a diverse natural landscape, rich in ecological history and natural beauty. Bordered by the town's Transfer Station area, the Metropolitan District Commission (MDC) Lost Pond Reservation, and the Kennard Park and Conservation Area in Newton, the Lost Pond Conservation Area is a vital part of over 100 acres of interconnected open woodland, rocky outcrops, marshes, bogs, and streams.
At the heart of this conservation area lies Lost Pond, a fascinating "kettle hole" that has transformed into a quaking bog on its northern edge. This rare type of wetland, typical of New England, offers a glimpse into the region’s geological past, with peat deposits that can reach depths of 20 to 40 feet. As you explore, you'll experience the unique sensation of the land "quaking" beneath your feet—a testament to the area's natural wonder.
The conservation area serves multiple purposes, including wetland protection, wildlife habitat conservation, and environmental education. It's an ideal destination for passive exploration activities such as bird-watching and nature walks. The trails that wind through the area connect visitors to the neighboring Kennard Park and Conservation Areas, as well as the state's Lost Pond Reservation, providing endless opportunities for outdoor adventure.
In addition to its ecological significance, the Lost Pond Conservation Area has a rich history. In 1915, Frederick Kennard redirected the pond's drainage to South Meadow Brook. The town acquired the land in 1945, using it for various municipal purposes before transferring a section to the Conservation Commission in 1982. Thanks to the dedication of local citizens and the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, the area remains a protected sanctuary for future generations to enjoy.
Whether you're a nature enthusiast, a history buff, or simply seeking a peaceful retreat, the Lost Pond Conservation Area invites you to discover its natural and historical treasures. Visit us and immerse yourself in the tranquil beauty of this extraordinary New England landscape.

"Very nice trail! Would not recommend it on a rainy day or after a heavy rain."
"Nice variety of terrain. Not the best marked but it’s suburban Boston so you can’t really get lost. Semi dog friendly too"
"This is a peaceful trail less traveled adjacent to Skyline Park. A nice place for some moments of solitude."
"Low traffic on the trail, a nice moderate hike but the routes are not very well marked. I recommend using the All Trails app for a map of the routes."
"This is a nice place to explore- I ramble around in here before my kids' soccer games at Skyline or on lunchtime runs from my workplace in Newton Centre. You can enter either from the near side before the Transfer Station or from the residential neighborhood on the north end. The only downside is that the trail around the Transfer Station (not the one that ends up on Dudley) is very, very rooty so it's hard to actually run on. Keep a sharp eye out for the turkeys!"
