Discover the Legacy of Jack Kerouac in Lowell, Massachusetts
Nestled in the historic Edson Cemetery, the Grave of Jack Kerouac at 5 Carlisle Street, Lowell, Massachusetts, is a poignant tribute to one of America's most influential writers of the 20th century. Known for his groundbreaking novel "On The Road," Kerouac's work embodies the spirit of the Beat Generation—a counterculture movement that embraced jazz, exploration, and the road less traveled.
For decades, literary enthusiasts and admirers have made pilgrimages to this site, leaving behind offerings of cigarettes, joints, and dollar shots with a sip missing, just in case Jack wakes up thirsty. Poets pay homage by leaving their works, impaled on pens, standing guard around the original flat headstone, like a protective stockade.
Kerouac's resting place is a testament to his adventurous spirit and the profound impact he had on American literature. Despite the tumult of his life, his journey led him back to Lowell, the city of his birth. Here, amidst the fading textiles of a once-thriving town, Kerouac's grave stands as a beacon for those seeking connection to his legacy.
Located near the corner of Lincoln and 7th in Edson Cemetery, the grave is easy to find thanks to its unique markers. The original flat headstone bears his name, John Kerouac, with his childhood nickname, Ti Jean, inscribed above. In 2014, a new waist-high granite slab was added, featuring Jack's signature and his famous line, "The Road is Life."
Visitors should be mindful of the surrounding graves, which bear the scars of careless visitors. Despite Kerouac's later life as a recluse, turning away from fame and friends, his resting place continues to draw those inspired by his literary contributions.

"This is an absolute monster of a graveyard in Lowell ma. This is an amazing place to take a stroll or get into a walk in regiment. Because it's literally blocks and blocks. And it is a very old graveyard as well as a very new graveyard. But the oaks are hundreds of years old. And it is an amazing place to see some of the most beautiful tombstones. And dedications of love That fills you with an emotion equal to McBeth. Amazing walks plenty of adventure and amazing tombs and tombstones"
"My wife and I have been visiting different cemeteries around New England to try ghost hunting. We have been doing multiple EVPs each time and we have picked up quite a bit of indistinct voices, breathing and other unexplainable sounds. We had good luck here and at the other cemetery near rte 38 in Lowell. Happy hunting"
"“A dreaded sunny day So let's go where we're happy And I meet you at the cemetry gates” -Cemetry Gates (the smiths) Easy to find…visit the Jack Kerouac Park in Lowell, Massachusetts afterwards!"
"“The road is life,” the big one says with gusto. It was nice to leave a penny on Kerouac’s resting place with my son on a bright day, and to see the notes and tokens left by others. Easy enough to find, and worth taking a moment. We had driven by the house where he was born 20 minutes earlier - unmarked, with a dude out front, in a clean cut working class neighborhood. I wished for a marker there."
"As someone who loves the Beat Generation and Jack Kerouac I gotta say this gravesite had so much meaning to it. Lots of ppl placed things on his grave and just shows how much of an icon he truly was to so many people"
