About the Business
Nathan Meriam House
Nestled in the historic town of Concord, Massachusetts, the Nathan Meriam House stands as a testament to the rich history and enduring legacy of the Meriam family. Located on Old Bedford Road, this iconic landmark traces its roots back to 1663 when John Meriam, the first of his family born in North America, and his wife Mary constructed the original dwelling on what is now known as Meriam's Corner.
In the years that followed, the Meriam family expanded their homestead. In 1691, John and Sarah Meriam built a second dwelling at the corner, and by 1705, Joseph Meriam and his wife Dorothy Brooks added a third home to the site. These homes became central to the unfolding history of Concord, especially during the Revolutionary War.
On the morning when Concord was alerted to the advancing British soldiers, Josiah Meriam and his sons joined the local militia, playing their part in the historic events at the North Bridge. Meanwhile, young Joseph Meriam, only seven years old, stayed behind to protect the women of the household before seeking refuge behind the hill. The British troops, upon entering the Meriam home, helped themselves to whatever provisions they could find, notably taking unbaked pies from the oven.
Today, the Nathan Meriam House invites visitors to explore its storied past and experience a piece of American history. For those wishing to delve deeper into the rich tapestry of Concord's revolutionary heritage, the North Bridge/Park Headquarters located at 174 Liberty St., Concord, MA, offers an excellent starting point.
