Morey Hill Summit and Stone Cairn
About the Business
Welcome to Morey Hill Summit and Stone Cairn, a unique museum nestled in the picturesque town of Becket, Massachusetts. Located at Massachusetts 8, our site offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of the Jacob’s Ladder Trail, a once-bustling destination marked by the iconic stone cairn at the summit, reaching an elevation of 1,775 feet. This historical landmark was originally established during the grand inauguration of the highway in September 1910, led by Mrs. George Westinghouse.
The stone cairn is a cherished relic from a bygone era, symbolizing the rich heritage of the region. In 2010, a centennial celebration of the scenic byway was held here, during which a new stone was added to the cairn, and descendants of the Westinghouse family revisited this storied site.
Visitors can also explore nearby Jacob’s Well and Jacob’s Spring, historically significant spots where early motorists would pause to cool their overheated engines while navigating the challenging hills of the Jacob’s Ladder Trail.
Our museum is proudly developed in cooperation with the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT), Office of Transportation Planning, and the United States Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration. The website was designed and developed by Alex Turnwall, with marketing and branding by New Arts Collaborative, and copywriting by Kris Bierfelt.
Discover the historical charm and scenic beauty of Morey Hill Summit and Stone Cairn, and immerse yourself in the legacy of a landmark that has captivated visitors for more than a century.
