"Completely bored with the usual Carmel/PG/Monterey, over intellectualized, en-plein-air contingent; I happened upon pieces by this artist at the Youth Art Collective on Calle Principal in Monterey. His impressionistic (and, in older pieces, cubist) style is a rejuvenated and engaging take on tired subjects. Interested in contracting a commission, we visited his studio and were able to view an array of his current work. His color usage is bold and edgy. His interpretation both playful and deeply personal. Every piece (even among the unexceptional) moved/gleamed with a life/light of its own. Although I, personally, am tired of beach and bar scenes; his take on night time subjects (such as the theatre Del Mar, a corner store reminiscent of the Seaside Market on Noche Buena, and amalgams of bar flies) is arresting and much like looking at the sun...stunning...and seen long after you are no longer looking. His talent obviously warrants exclusivity, and yet portions of his work were priced within reach of the common man. Given the current state of the art world, this is a surprising action that (like his work) is a lit philosophy in a caliginous reality. If you have any appreciation of art, and are in the Monterey area, stopping by the Youth Art Collective or Outer Edge Studio to view pieces by Andrew Jackson is a must."
