The centerpiece of Valparaiso Plaza is a historic cannon, perched majestically on the bluff and overlooking the vast ocean. This cannon, once a guardian of Valparaiso, Chile, was graciously donated by its citizens in 1976. It stands as a powerful symbol of the strength and unity shared between the two sister cities. In recognition of this bond, the Long Beach City Council dedicated this area of what was formerly Bixby Park as Valparaiso Plaza in the same year.
The plaza sits on a portion of land that became separated from Bixby Park when Junipero Avenue was extended to provide access to a newly constructed beach parking lot in 1968. Today, it serves as a delightful passage for beachgoers heading to Junipero Beach, offering a moment to pause and appreciate the historical ties represented by the cannon.
