About the Business
Whaley Park Community Center, located at 5620 East Atherton Street in Long Beach, California, is a vibrant institution funded by a grant from CalRecycle. This 13.5-acre park offers a range of amenities including a sports field, playground equipment, basketball courts, roller hockey practice court, picnic tables, and athletic fields. The recreation center hosts various classes and events, with its social hall available for rental for receptions, reunions, and other gatherings.
The park, adjacent to CSULB, features a soccer field, basketball court, tennis court, volleyball court, group picnic area, and three playgrounds. Renovations to the community center and park landscaping were completed in 1992 with funding from the state Park Bond Act of 1988. Additional improvements, such as sports field lighting and playground redevelopment, were made possible through various grants and funds.
Originally donated by developer Lloyd Whaley in the 1950s, the park was later renamed in his honor. Today, Whaley Park Community Center continues to be a hub for community activities and events. For more information or to inquire about reservations, please call 570-3111.

"I actually went to the park behind the community center. Which has been completely remodeled. It’s really nice. There’s a bunch of climbing and swinging structures. There’s also a little play structure for kids 2-5, it’s completely enclosed. The bathrooms however are near the baseball concession stand, which isn’t the easiest to find with kids who really have to go. I had to walk to the front of the community center to find that out and then back across the play area."

"Our kids really look this park. This one had a separate play ground for young children and a larger area for the older kids. There are a carpet of things to do - slide, swings, diggers, and all kids of rope devices or as we call them spider webs. There are also music devices for the kids and parents to preform on. Everything is rather spread out so everyone can have going even when it starts to get crowded. There is a nice parking lot, but I have not seen bathrooms. Luckily we've not needed them."
