Welcome to Elizabeth Alexandra Morton National Wildlife Refuge
Nestled on the scenic Noyack Road in Sag Harbor, New York, the Elizabeth Alexandra Morton National Wildlife Refuge is a sanctuary of natural beauty and biodiversity. Established in 1954, this 187-acre refuge is a vital part of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's efforts to conserve and protect wildlife and their habitats.
The refuge is beautifully situated on a peninsula between Noyack and Little Peconic Bays, offering a diverse array of habitats including sandy and rocky beaches, wooded bluffs, upland forests, fields, ponds, salt marshes, and a lagoon. These varied environments support a wide variety of wildlife, from white-tailed deer and eastern chipmunks to painted turtles, green frogs, and an array of songbirds and waterfowl.
Visitors to the refuge can enjoy observing species such as the long-tailed duck, common goldeneye, and white-winged scoter during the winter months, while spring and summer bring sightings of piping plover, terns, and other water birds. The refuge's commitment to wildlife conservation is evident in the thoughtful management of these precious resources, ensuring that both wildlife and visitors can thrive.
To protect these species, the refuge has designated certain beach areas as closed, marked by signs, fencing, and twine. Visitors play a crucial role in conservation by respecting these closures, keeping the refuge clean, and avoiding activities that might disturb wildlife. It is important to note that the practice of hand-feeding birds is discouraged, as it can inadvertently harm endangered species by attracting predators and providing inadequate nutrition.
Whether you're a bird enthusiast, nature lover, or simply looking for a peaceful escape, the Elizabeth Alexandra Morton National Wildlife Refuge offers a unique opportunity to connect with nature. With patience and respect for the environment, there's always something remarkable to observe. Join us in our mission to conserve, protect, and enhance America's natural treasures for future generations.
Visit us today and immerse yourself in the beauty and tranquility of nature, where every season brings a new spectacle of life.

"Comfortable walk. You can feed the birds and chipmunks"
"Great as always. Definitely bring bird seed to feed the chickadees"
"Such a quiet, restful place to go. There's wildlife everywhere and the walk to the beach will get you to a nice swimming area, very clean. Such a relaxing place to visit. Please don't break the rules with feeding the wildlife. They are a sanctuary and the people that leave food out attract rodents that effect the nesting shore birds. Some on the protected species list. Be respectful and keep this a nice quiet place for everyone to enjoy. Thank you."
"Always a fun experience. The birds come right to you. Don’t forget your bird seed!"
"Incredible place where we bring our children. My wife has been coming here since she was a child. It is definitely one of my favorite places to go to!"
