Welcome to North Forty Natural Area
Nestled in the northernmost corner of Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn, New York, the North Forty Natural Area is a serene escape for nature enthusiasts and wildlife admirers. Easily accessible by public transportation, car, or bicycle, this hidden gem is bordered by the Belt Parkway to the north and Flatbush Avenue to the east. Visit our directions page for more information.
Explore a network of hiking trails that wind through diverse mixed woodlands, home to a rich array of flora and fauna. The North Forty is a sanctuary for birdwatchers, including members of the Brooklyn Bird Club, who frequent the area to observe its vibrant avian population. Among the lush greenery, you'll find conifers, deciduous trees, and native shrubs like bayberry and sumacs, with Virginia creeper and poison ivy weaving through the canopy.
The Return-A-Gift Pond, a freshwater jewel within the North Forty, supports a thriving ecosystem of reptiles, amphibians, and wetland birds. Along its muddy edges, ferns and sedges flourish, creating a picturesque habitat for diverse wildlife. In contrast, the nearby sandy upland area hosts sun-loving shrubs, fungi, and lichen.
Thanks to the dedicated efforts of MillionTreesNYC volunteers, newly planted trees are taking root, contributing to the long-term sustainability of New York City. This flourishing environment provides essential habitats and food sources for migrating and resident wildlife, from black racers and garter snakes to pollinators like swallowtail and monarch butterflies.
As you wander through the North Forty, you might spot Fowler's toads along the trails or hear the enchanting evening chorus of spring peepers. However, please stay vigilant for ticks, including those that carry Lyme Disease, and bring insect repellent, especially near the Return-A-Gift Pond in the evening.
Immerse yourself in the tranquility of the North Forty Natural Area, a vibrant natural oasis in the heart of Brooklyn. Whether you're a seasoned birdwatcher or a casual nature lover, this beautiful park offers a unique opportunity to connect with the natural world.

"We had to search for this place for a very long time since we didn't reach the end of the forest and went to the field near the ocean."
"If you want to reach there by walk donโt take the forest! Easy way is find the parking lot for paddling and fishing, and just go to shore and there you wishing place is in front of you! Police said that place is not safe for evening after 6pm. Beware!"
"Very interesting hiking trail adjacent to Floyd Bennett Field. Leave your car in the parking area in the north east corner of the field, and take a hike. Path leads west through thick trees and bushes, or north along a narrow beach, its width dependent on the time of day, due to the tide. A dilapidated structure was once the mess hall for the U.S. Navy during WWII (I believe), as well as the place Joaquin Phoenix killed the drug dealer in We Own The Night (Iโm pretty sure). And as I ran along the beach, passing remnants of old boats, I fully expected to see apes riding horses, plus the remains of the Statue of Liberty in the distance."
"I started my hike at the HARP museum and walked the trail for about 1.5 miles in search of abandoned ruins . This is what I encountered. It was a bit crazy walking down a entire runway in the end ."
"This was a perfect nature walk for my family. It was long enough to seem somewhat rigourous, but not a full blown hike. It is definitely a sanctuary for wildlife with song birds everywhere. In many parts it seemed very expansive with no end to the wilds in sight. a lovely place and not crowded at all. We saw only one couple on the trails. It is a very interesting place too, not just beautiful. Every once in a while you come across some old ruins of a former time."
