About the Business
Discover Lefferts Historic House: A Journey Through Time and Culture
Located at 452 Flatbush Avenue, Brooklyn, New York, the Lefferts Historic House is a captivating 18th-century farmhouse and a treasured New York City landmark. Nestled within the scenic landscape of Prospect Park, this museum and tourist attraction offers visitors a unique glimpse into the past, while engaging with pressing contemporary issues.
Originally situated just blocks away from its current location, the farmhouse was moved to Prospect Park in 1918. Today, it is jointly operated by the Prospect Park Alliance and the Historic House Trust. In 2021, the Alliance launched the ReImagine Lefferts initiative, a transformative project aimed at re-envisioning the museum's mission and programming. This initiative places a spotlight on the lives, resistance, and resilience of the Indigenous people of Lenapehoking and the Africans enslaved by the Lefferts family. Through stories of resistance, resilience, empowerment, and joy, the museum seeks to create a safe space for reflecting on our collective past and addressing contemporary community issues.
The ReImagine Lefferts initiative has sparked new research and partnerships, leading to the development of innovative indoor and outdoor exhibits, hands-on experiences, cultural performances, and imaginative programs. These efforts are designed to inspire visitors with stories of everyday heroism and engage audiences of all ages and backgrounds. The initiative is made possible by a Humanities in Place grant from the Mellon Foundation.
Visitors are invited to explore the Lefferts Historic House on select dates and public school holidays, excluding Thanksgiving. Be sure to view the newly developed interpretive plan for the museum, crafted in collaboration with Ralph Appelbaum Associates, which guides this exciting transformation.

"Its a great place to remember New York as it once was. The place features a working garden, historic artifacts, period rooms and exhibits. Visitors are encouraged to play with traditional tools, toys and games, and engage in historic activities such as candle making, sewing and butter churning. Its great for children to experience being in this house and also to learn the history behind this place."
