About the Business
Welcome to the Red Hook Community Justice Center
Located at 88 Visitation Place, Brooklyn, New York, the Red Hook Community Justice Center is a groundbreaking institution dedicated to solving neighborhood issues and reforming justice in southwest Brooklyn. As the nation's first multi-jurisdictional community court, it serves as a model for innovative justice reform worldwide.
Our Mission
The Justice Center brings together Civil, Family, and Criminal court cases under a single judge, offering a comprehensive approach to justice. Our mission is to enhance public safety and trust in the legal system while reducing recidivism and reliance on incarceration. By implementing community restitution projects, psycho-educational groups, and long-term treatment programs, we focus on rehabilitation and community restoration.
Innovative Programs
The Justice Center is recognized for its unconventional programs aimed at fostering community well-being:
- Peacemaking Programs: Inspired by traditional Native American justice, these initiatives focus on healing and community restoration.
- Youth Courts: Training teenagers to handle real-life cases, offering restorative responses to peer misbehavior.
- Housing Assistance: Providing tenants with legal support to navigate housing court, prevent evictions, and secure critical repairs.
- Driver Accountability Program: Addressing driving-related offenses to improve traffic safety and driver accountability.
Community Engagement
Our programs extend beyond the courtroom:
- 'Bridging the Gap' Events: Bringing together youth, police officers, and community members to dismantle stereotypes and foster mutual understanding.
- Internships and Collaborations: Partnering with local police and community organizations to beautify neighborhoods and strengthen community ties.
Impact and Recognition
The Red Hook Community Justice Center has significantly reduced recidivism, with a 20% drop among juvenile defendants and a 10% reduction in adult re-offending. Less than 1% of cases result in jail sentences at arraignment, underscoring our commitment to alternative justice solutions. Our efforts have been validated by an independent evaluation and have earned multiple national awards for innovation.

Reviews
"I'm the Peacemaking Program Manager and I love being apart of the community"
"How is it possible that this courthouse has been closed since last year due to COVID? Other courts are doing cases by phone but when you call this place there’s no one to help and the phone numbers are invalid. Ridiculous and ghetto smh!!"
"Edgar at legal aid saved me.judge is very understanding. Security officer very polite."
"Everybody work there Good people very nice The lawyer is the DAs and the judge w love ❤️❤️❤️"
"I struggled with addiction for 12 years of my life and eventually ended up at the Justice Center and I'm extremely grateful for this. They addressed the under lying issues of addiction which was the reason for my criminal activity and gave me an opportunity to get help by going to rehab. The whole staff there is wonderful from the officers down stairs in holding to the social workers, the lawyers and especially the judge. He's a wonderful man who truly cares and wants to help people. I've been clean for almost 2 years now and still keep in contact with the staff to update them of my progress. I hope that the whole country will replicate this program so that people can get the help they need instead of just sitting in jail."
