About the Business

Welcome to Magnolia Tree Earth Center, a cherished institution located at 677 Lafayette Avenue in the heart of Brooklyn's Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood. For over 50 years, we have been a beacon of environmental stewardship, community resilience, and education. Our mission is to nurture a deep connection between people and nature, celebrating the rich history and vibrant future of our community.
Founded in the 1970s by visionary Carthan, Magnolia Tree Earth Center was established to protect a historic magnolia tree planted in the 19th century. Through her dedicated efforts, Carthan secured landmark status for our iconic brownstone buildings, ensuring their preservation for future generations. Today, we continue to honor her legacy by offering a wide range of environmental education programs, including gardening and urban forestry classes, that inspire and empower our community members.
Despite recent financial challenges exacerbated by the pandemic and contractor issues, we remain committed to our mission. We are actively working to address urgent repairs and fines to ensure the center's continued operation as a vital resource for Bed-Stuy and beyond.
Join us in preserving history, nurturing community, and cultivating a sustainable future. Together, we can protect and celebrate the natural beauty and resilience of our beloved neighborhood. Visit us at Magnolia Tree Earth Center to learn more about our programs and how you can get involved in our efforts to create a greener, more connected world.
Reviews
"As an individual who has been following the Magnolia Tree Earth Center's renovation process closely, I must say that I am extremely irritated at the lack of communication from the center and the general public. The complete lack of updates and information has left me feeling frustrated and confused about the reasons behind the ridiculously long renovation time frame. It is beyond me how an organization with such an important mission could fail so miserably in keeping its supporters and the public informed about its progress. With each passing month, my frustration only grows, and it is not helped by the fact that the center seems to be dragging its feet on getting the project completed. Furthermore, I am deeply dissatisfied with the current use of the center. It is simply unacceptable that such an important space, which is meant to serve as a hub for environmental education and community engagement, is sitting idle and unutilized. This is a disservice to the community, especially given the pressing environmental challenges we face today."
"Magnolia tree Earth center is a community-based center right in the middle of bed Stuyvesant. They just celebrate 80 women that just came to this country. You can also rent out space at Magnolia's for a reasonable price"
"QI was at the Adbudance In UJAMAA 2nd Annual #Kwanzaa #kwanzaa2021 Extravaganza hosted by the Inner Child Network and Watoto Entertainment this evening in the Magnolia Tree Earth Center 12/26/2021 @innerchildnetwork @watoto_entertainment @aiumovement"
"Definitely a staple in the community. I recommend this space. It’s beautiful. A group of us planned a game night and a Kwanzaa event here and also a dance class. All were a success. We will definitely continue to use this space for events."
