About the Business
Welcome to the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine, a beacon of hope and renewal located at 130 Liberty Street, Manhattan, New York. As the only house of worship destroyed on 9/11, this sacred site has been meticulously rebuilt and renewed, inspired by the words of our Lord Jesus Christ: "Rebuild My Church." Today, it stands as more than a humble Greek Orthodox Church; it is a National Shrine and a place of pilgrimage for our nation, embracing the spirit of a House of Prayer for all people (Mark 11:17).
Designed by the renowned Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, the St. Nicholas National Shrine draws inspiration from the architectural elements of the Cathedral Church of Hagia Sophia and the Church of Our Savior in Chora. At its heart is "The Icon of the Virgin Mary Embracing New York City," an eternal beacon of hope known as "Platytera ton Ouranon" or "more spacious than the heavens." This beloved image of the Mother of God stands as a protectress and defender of New York City, welcoming all who wish to venerate or simply admire her beauty.
Originally founded in 1916, the Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church was a part of a vibrant, multi-ethnic neighborhood before being overshadowed by the World Trade Center. It was ultimately destroyed on 9/11 when the South Tower collapsed. Now, the church has risen from the ashes, standing strong in the fullness of Orthodox Christian faith, serving as a Shrine for the Nation, and offering a place for remembrance and reflection for all.
The Friends of Saint Nicholas, established in December 2019, plays a crucial role in raising, investing, managing, and disbursing funds for the construction and ongoing improvements of the church and shrine. This sacred space serves as a temple of memory and honor for those whose lives were tragically cut short on that fateful day. As a symbol of remembrance, it provides programs aimed at fostering reconciliation, mutual understanding, and religious respect.
