As the only house of worship destroyed on 9/11, this sacred site has been meticulously rebuilt and renewed, inspired by the words of our Lord Jesus Christ: "Rebuild My Church." Designed by the renowned Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, the St. Nicholas National Shrine draws inspiration from the architectural elements of the Cathedral Church of Hagia Sophia and the Church of Our Savior in Chora. At its heart is "The Icon of the Virgin Mary Embracing New York City," an eternal beacon of hope known as "Platytera ton Ouranon" or "more spacious than the heavens." This beloved image of the Mother of God stands as a protectress and defender of New York City, welcoming all who wish to venerate or simply admire her beauty.
