About the Business
Welcome to the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine, a beacon of hope and renewal located at 130 Liberty Street, Manhattan, New York. As the only house of worship destroyed on 9/11, this sacred site has been meticulously rebuilt and renewed, inspired by the words of our Lord Jesus Christ: "Rebuild My Church." Today, it stands as more than a humble Greek Orthodox Church; it is a National Shrine and a place of pilgrimage for our nation, embracing the spirit of a House of Prayer for all people (Mark 11:17).
Designed by the renowned Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, the St. Nicholas National Shrine draws inspiration from the architectural elements of the Cathedral Church of Hagia Sophia and the Church of Our Savior in Chora. At its heart is "The Icon of the Virgin Mary Embracing New York City," an eternal beacon of hope known as "Platytera ton Ouranon" or "more spacious than the heavens." This beloved image of the Mother of God stands as a protectress and defender of New York City, welcoming all who wish to venerate or simply admire her beauty.
Originally founded in 1916, the Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church was a part of a vibrant, multi-ethnic neighborhood before being overshadowed by the World Trade Center. It was ultimately destroyed on 9/11 when the South Tower collapsed. Now, the church has risen from the ashes, standing strong in the fullness of Orthodox Christian faith, serving as a Shrine for the Nation, and offering a place for remembrance and reflection for all.
The Friends of Saint Nicholas, established in December 2019, plays a crucial role in raising, investing, managing, and disbursing funds for the construction and ongoing improvements of the church and shrine. This sacred space serves as a temple of memory and honor for those whose lives were tragically cut short on that fateful day. As a symbol of remembrance, it provides programs aimed at fostering reconciliation, mutual understanding, and religious respect.
We invite you to visit the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine at the World Trade Center to experience this miraculous renewal and spiritual sanctuary. Join us in bringing light and life to Lower Manhattan and paying homage to those we remember.

"Beautiful space that is respite in the middle of the concrete skyscrapers. Beautiful recording of Greek services playing. Candles and icons."
"The church is stunning, with an incredible structure. Unfortunately, the original church fell victim to the 9/11 tragedy when the South Tower collapsed. Its exterior is crafted from the same marble as the Parthenon, courtesy of the Greek government. Inside, it's truly magnificent and breathtaking."
"St Nicholas Orthodox Church holds a special place in my heart. Itβs not just any church in the city, the original was founded in 1916. This rebuild is incredible and modeled after Hagia Sofia in Istanbul. Most special is the lighting design which appears like a candle lit and made with Pentelic marble from Greece. Highly recommend a visit and stay for one of their services. First time experiencing Byzantine chanting too."
"St. Nicholas Orthodox Church in NYC is not just a church, it's a masterpiece reborn from its ashes. The reconstruction is a work of art, meticulously crafted with stone imported from Greece, adding an authentic touch that connects it to its roots. The church's architecture is a breathtaking blend of traditional and modern design, making it a must-visit for anyone who appreciates architectural brilliance. Beyond its physical beauty, the church holds a rich tapestry of history and spiritual significance. Its serene ambiance offers a unique spiritual experience, irrespective of your religious beliefs. I highly recommend taking the time to visit this magnificent site. Whether you are drawn to its architectural grandeur, its historical depth, or its religious essence, St. Nicholas Orthodox Church is a landmark in NYC that truly captivates and inspires."
"What a beautiful architectural church rebuilt from the destruction of 9/11. Stunning artwork inside, and an incredible all-marble exterior. A bright light to remind of us to be hopeful. Stop by if you visit the 9/11 memorial next door - well worth the time."
