The Central Park Turtle Pond Manhattan, New York,
About the Business
Welcome to The Central Park Turtle Pond, a serene escape nestled in the heart of Manhattan, New York. Located just south of the Great Lawn, this two-acre water body is a beloved spot for relaxation, picnicking, and appreciating the diverse species of turtles that inhabit the pond. Enjoy breathtaking views of the iconic Belvedere Castle, perched on the dramatic Vista Rock, as you explore the area.
Home to five species of turtles, including the common red-eared sliders, Turtle Pond offers a unique glimpse into the vibrant ecosystem of Central Park. These turtles, many of which are former pets, now thrive in this urban sanctuary. Please remember, it is illegal to release pets or other animals into the park, as it disrupts the delicate balance of the ecosystem.
Turtle Pond, originally created in 1937 and renamed in 1987, features a naturalistic shoreline and a wooden platform for observing wildlife. Whether you're a nature lover, a first-time visitor, or a seasoned park-goer, Turtle Pond invites you to connect with the intricate ecological systems that make Central Park a vital green space for New Yorkers and visitors alike.
While visiting, please note that select paths around the Delacorte Theater are closed due to construction. Follow detour signs to navigate the area safely. To support the continued beauty and vibrancy of Central Park, consider making a gift to the Central Park Conservancy.
Discover the stories behind the park with insights from Conservancy staff and explore our recent initiatives, like the Climate Lab, dedicated to preserving this cherished landscape amid the challenges of climate change. Join us in celebrating the history, nature, and community that define Central Park, a cornerstone of New York City life.

"Saw turtles!!!! Lots of them, was not too keen on watching a girl pick up a sunbathing turtle for photo ops, just leave it there and admire it, no need to scare the little guy. But this was fun to see!"
"I work in Central Park and I must say I love it my favorite place to go to on lunch is turtle pond. Did you know turtles were not originally inhabiting this pond and were placed there by the conservatory and now there are hundreds ! I love to go visit them as itβs peaceful and as a New Yorker you get to hide away from tourists. This is by far my favorite view of the lake and the Belvedere castle ! Btw I recommend using the company I do marketing and social media for bike rent nyc to get around with ease this is located in the center of the park on the east side of 72 nd road and the mall."
