"Because nothing can replace direct contact with an artist in the presence of his work, I highly recommend a visit to Ligel’s studio. He enthusiastically displayed a series of mixed-media pieces called Made in the USA which feature paint and real American flags framed by bold colors and intense brushstrokes which mingle with the flag’s fabric and create a striking backdrop for the flag itself. He intends to create fifty of these pieces in total, and has completed 29 so far. He also has created many jazz-inspired paintings in which he adeptly renders the sounds and spirit of the music in a visual representation. Ligel is friendly and presents his work with passion and humor. He has an interesting life story which provides context for his visual explorations of identity and experience. He shared a sweet and interesting fruit with us called kenep (apparently popular in Haiti) and we chatted genially in his kitchen. He showed us his work right in the studio which made us feel close to the process and welcomed into the space where his creation takes place. We bought a beautiful poster of a painting called "Out of Notes" which combines the energy of abstract expressionism with a distinctive representation of a saxophone player. You can see this poster in his online shop, or better yet, drop by the studio and have him show it to you."
"Ligel is an amazing artist and teacher! His artwork is unique and taking one of his courses will be a special experience for everyone who is interested in art. I really enjoyed it!!!"
"I took an impressionistic art class from Ligel. He has a large studio and was already set up for the students so we were able to start painting soon after the intro. Ligel did a great job of giving me an overview of the concept and explaining the process. From time to time during the class he would take some time to show techniques on his painting then helped instruct me on how to do the same thing on mine. I really enjoyed the class and was thrilled to have a piece of art to take home. Ligel does have the option of leaving your art in the studio until it dries."
"I would consider my self as an “emerging artist” I have been self learning how to paint for a few years. When I was in NYC I researched for an advanced one day workshop I could attended that would help me grow. After much reasearch ligel’s “Fauvist” painting class was the best I could find however, it was in the Bronx which was a bit far from where I was staying none the less I decided to go. I was utterly surprised when we began the course by ligel’s deep knowledge in art and art history and his ability to delver it in a simple way a fifth grader could understand. As we began the class I noticed that ligel teach you technical skills by making you more comfortable with your decisions and in tune with your emotions he try’s to bring you to the here and know in front of the canvas which is in essence the most important thing in becoming an artist (in my opinion)."
"Ligel is a great artist and an interesting person to talk to. His studio will make you feel like you are in a small museum. I enjoyed his paintings based on the American flag and I learned some new things about different types of art that I was unfamiliar with."
