Parade Ground

Welcome to Parade Ground, a vibrant hub located in the heart of Van Cortlandt Park in The Bronx, New York. Whether you're here to enjoy a leisurely barbecue or explore the scenic hiking trails, Parade Ground offers a unique blend of nature, history, and community activities for all ages.

Barbecuing Guidelines:

We invite you to enjoy a barbecue at Parade Ground, but please exercise caution and maintain a safe distance from other patrons, children, and trees. Remember to clean your area thoroughly before leaving. All coal and matches must be disposed of in designated hot coal barrels. Use water to extinguish hot coals, and never place flammable items in regular litter barrels. For gatherings with more than 20 attendees, a permit is required, which must be applied for 30 days in advance. You can apply for a Special Event permit [here](https://nyceventpermits.nyc.gov/Parks/).

Explore Van Cortlandt Park:

Parade Ground is your gateway to Van Cortlandt Park’s rich history and natural beauty. Discover over 20 miles of hiking trails, each offering unique vistas and historical insights. From the moderate Cass Gallagher Trail to the easy-going Putnam Greenway, there’s a path for every adventurer. As you explore, you'll find the Old Croton Aqueduct Trail, a testament to 19th-century engineering, and the John Muir Nature Trail, which traverses the park's central terrain.

Local Attractions:

Don't miss the Van Cortlandt House Museum, New York City’s oldest house, located in the park's southwestern corner near Broadway and West 246th Street. This Georgian-style manor house is open to visitors from Tuesday to Sunday and offers a glimpse into the area's eclectic history.

Events and Education:

The Van Cortlandt Park Alliance hosts a variety of special events throughout the year, transforming the park’s 1,146 acres into an outdoor classroom. For more information or to register a school group visit, please check our Explorable Places site.

Pet Policy:

While enjoying the park, please keep dogs leashed at all times unless they are in a designated dog run area.

Conveniently located just a short walk from the intersection of Broadway & Mosholu Avenue, Parade Ground is easily accessible by subway or bus, making it a perfect escape for millions of New Yorkers. Immerse yourself in a dense, hilly forest filled with 200-million-year-old rock outcrops and 150-year-old trees, all while experiencing the vibrant community spirit of The Bronx.

We look forward to welcoming you to Parade Ground, where nature, history, and community come together in the heart of The Bronx.

"They shouldn’t call that a cricket field. It’s a soccer pitch. My school, Barnard, used to play our soccer games on those fields. Good memories. Great days gone by, 55 years ago."

"Huge beautiful open space (a rare thing in the Bronx). You'll find soccer, cross country, baseball, cricket, soccer and all sorts of international sports happening here at various times. Barbecuing is not permitted and picnicking is possible but not very popular."
