"I had suffered for many years with what I called The Mother Of All Bunions on my right foot, which was caused by having very flat feet and a high-motion landing and lift-off during my running, which I did for many years and sometimes for long distances. The fact that this foot was hideous to look at was the least of my problems: It blistered along the inside to the point where it often got infected, plus my big toe bent so far to the right that it actually snuck underneath my second toe, in effect lifting it up-- which caused chronic pain and inflammation on that toe in addition to what was starting to feel like acute nerve pain in the entire large metatarsal area. What's more, I actually work in the comfort footwear industry and even THOSE shoes didn't feel good on the foot--even when they were professionally adjusted by a pedorthist! So, as you can imagine I really wanted the bunion fixed, but over the years I was told by other podiatrists that what I really needed to do was stop running, find some other sport that doesn't aggravate my foot and wear wide New Balance sneakers as my only footwear. This was impossible! So I decided to look into surgery and found that Dr. Conforti was local, performs bunion surgery all the time, and took my insurance. The receptionist was incredibly kind and understanding, assuring me that this foot doctor was one of the best anywhere. Within 5 minutes of my consultation with Dr. Conforti last spring, I was already a fan and the decision was made to have him operate on me in the fall. He said everything I needed to hear: that I required a very particular kind of surgery that not every podiatrist could do, and that in fact he was often called upon to "fix" other surgeons' screw-ups on this surgery. He showed me before-and-after x-rays of other patients with my problem and assured me that I would be yet another success story. Not just that he would shave the bone and straighten the toe, but that once healed I would be able to run again comfortably, and never need this surgery again. Because my 4 other toes were already bent to the side from the bunion but didn't require surgery, he would strike a balance between straightening my big toe and avoiding a gap between that toe and the second toe. So he wouldn't over-straighten it, because that would just cause other problems. As a bonus, he was a really nice person who spent a lot of time with me and even asked me at one point, "Do you have any other questions?" I actually cried with relief on the way home! On November 30, 2018, I had the surgery at the Hackensack outpatient surgery center. It took 5 hours to do, because my bones were unnaturally hard and tough to shave down-- he needed to be careful with them. He inserted a plate in there with 2 screws, all of which will remain in my foot permanently. It was a tough recovery, but only the first few days were painful and it wasn't even that bad. I was unable to put any weight on the foot for 9 weeks and unable to drive for 3 months. I rented a knee scooter to get around in bigger places and bought a second-hand iWalk2 for the house and smaller "walks." Dr. Conforti had told me that great compliance is crucial to a great result, and I took that to heart 110%. I saw him every week for a while and he was always so upbeat about my progress that I couldn't help but feel great about it even with the frustration of not being able to walk. Six months later, my foot is still a tiny bit swollen, but every month it gets less so. I believe that by the end of the summer I will be able to jog a little, and then by around a year after the surgery I will be back on decent-length runs again. And it LOOKS gorgeous!!! Bunion surgery is a big deal, and you want the best outcome possible which means the best doctor. I heartily recommend Dr. Conforti!"
