About the Business
Welcome to the South Jefferson Historical Association, a cherished museum and tourist attraction located at 29 East Church Street, Adams, New York. Our mission is the discovery, preservation, and dissemination of knowledge about the rich history of southern Jefferson County in New York State. We are dedicated to preserving historical materials and making them accessible to all who are interested in exploring or studying them.
Embark on a journey through time as you delve into the histories of the six towns that make up southern Jefferson County: Adams, Ellisburg, Henderson, Lorraine, Rodman, and Worth. Explore the stories of the villages, hamlets, and communities that have shaped this region, including Adams Center, Belleville, Henderson Harbor, and many more. Our research materials also extend to Jefferson County, Northern Oswego County, and Western Lewis County, offering a comprehensive look at the area's past.
At the South Jefferson Historical Association, we offer a wealth of resources for genealogy and local history research. Visitors can conduct research on-site or allow us to assist in gathering information. While there is no cost for research, we kindly request donations to cover postage and copies. Our extensive collection includes thousands of family surname files, a database of vital records from the Jefferson County Journal dating back to 1855, military records, early church records, town histories, federal census data, cemetery records, and more.
Step inside our 25-room Ripley House and explore a diverse array of displays. The first floor features an old-fashioned kitchen, dining room, parlor, and more, while the second floor offers a bedroom, Indian room, military room, and additional exhibits. In the basement, discover tools of all kinds, sports memorabilia, and even a cobbler room and jail. Our four-stall garage showcases agricultural displays, with many exhibits rotating regularly.
In addition to our historical exhibits, we offer engaging programs such as craft classes and fundraising events, including craft shows, chicken BBQs, pioneer days, and seasonal festivals like the Strawberry and Fall Festivals.
Our hours vary based on volunteer availability, but we strive to open our doors weekly. For more details or to schedule a visit, please call the Historic Association at (315) 232-2616 or reach out to Debbie Quick in the evenings at (315) 298-5953.
